It is England in 1959 and Florence Green is risking it all when she opens a bookstore in the conservative little coastal town. The villagers meet her decision with skepticism and Florence soon finds that she has a rival in the wealthy Mrs Gamert. She plans to open a cultural center in the same building where Florence has her bookstore. Florence struggles and comes to the point where she has to ask herself if it is worth having a bookstore in a city where it is not wanted. But then another book lover turns up. The Bookshop is based on Penelope Fitzgerald’s well-known novel, and is an elegant description of a fight for one’s own decisions when no one is there to support. We recognize the feeling of being alone and having to fight against conventions and old habits. And how important a supportive friend can be.
