In Joanna Hogg’s intimate and monumentally heartbreaking The Souvenir we see Tilda Swinton and her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne meet as actors, as well as mother and daughter in the film. The film takes place in the 80s and is about Julie, a young film school student in London who makes her way through her studies with financial support from her protective mother. She falls recklessly in love with the sophisticated and eloquent Anthony – a beautiful man that turns out to be hiding a deep addiction. The Souvenir is partly autobiographical and Joanna Hogg has created a fictive version of herself in Julie. From her own search for an own voice as an artist to her love for Anthony this is a remarkable film that in the smallest of details feels completely real.
