It is said that behind every successful man there is a woman, and in this film it is her we get to meet. Joan and Joe Castleman have been married for 40 years and during that time, Joan has held back her dreams and aspirations in order to help and support her husband Joe´s successful career as a writer. But Joan is starting to get enough of her husband being self-centered and unfaithful. Joe’s career reaches its peak, he is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and the couple will travel to Stockholm for the award ceremony. But how long will Joan be able to stand in the shadow of her husband? The wife interweaves the story of the couple’s youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of the marriage 30 years later. A joint life filled with shared compromises, secrets, betrayal and mutual love is depicted with great skill. Glenn Close is magical in this intense drama.
