A group of German construction workers is stationed in a beautiful valley in the Bulgarian countryside to build a hydroelectric power plant. The workers are loud and aggressive and soon tensions build with the locals in the neighboring village. One of the workers, Meinhardt, does not want to take part in the conflict and instead befriends the villagers. This decision sparks a showdown with the workers’ foreman Neumann. The film makes reference both to the western genre and to contemporary Western society’s self-image of superiority and it confirms Valeska Grisebach‘s position as one of Germanys most distinguished directors.
