In one day, everything in Lise’s life changes. She is a young woman about to leave her home with younger siblings and farming to get an education – her mother’s dream for her to be fulfilled. The time of the carefree child is coming to an end, adulthood looms. But both faith in God and doubt, superstition and compelling expectations get in the way. A story we’ve heard before can happen, but here reproduced with rare clarity and sometimes roaring pain.
A cracking portrait of life in an extended moment when everything slips out of one’s hands. A mother’s constant presence as the center and unifying force of everything. It’s hard to tear your eyes away from Flora Hoffman Lindahl in the lead role.
As in Heaven won the Dragon Award Best Nordic Film at this year’s edition of the Gothenburg Film Festival.
