In “Filming dad’s ass while he’s chopping logs with his chainsaw” Max Göran visits his father in a rural Swedish region where he works as a lumberjack. With the use of a camcorder he approaches their relationship marked by political disagreement and different life circumstances. Under his son’s camera gaze the father performs himself and plays with prefabricated images, which at present often revolve around the political sentiments of the working class.

Max Göran is an artist and filmmaker who lives and works between Berlin and Sweden. He holds an MFA from Goldsmiths and has studied with Josephine Pryde at the Berlin University of the Arts. He’s had solo exhibitions at Cell Project Space in London, and at Ceradon and Jenny’s Gallery in Los Angeles. His work has also been shown at festivals and in group exhibitions at galleries and institutions such as Galerie Neu, CPH:DOX, Kasseler Dokfest, The 7th Edition of the Athens Biennale, New Contemporaries, Kunstverein München, European Media Art Festival.

A film program about the forest – the queer forest. Whether there are trees there or not, as on Iceland, queers have always related to the forest as a place for secret meetings, a haven for erotic fantasies, feelings of freedom and a place to seek comfort from. Just like natural candies, the films are neither particularly natural nor healthy.

In this film program we meet seven stories where nature and the forest are highly present in different ways. Curated by Anna Linder in close collaboration with Kolbrún Inga Söring on behalf of the Umeå European Film Festival 2024. The selection has been made in view of the ongoing exhibition Eight Degrees – contemporary art about the forest, which is running until January 21, 2025 at Bildmuseet in Umeå.
