During the last decade, a bright star has been lit in the genre of French-Canadian low-budget comedies. Quentin Dupieux, who usually writes, directs, shoots and edits his films himself, has a very special twisted style, which has been noticed in films such as Rubber, Wrong and Deerskin, the latter shown at UEFF 2019. His new masterpiece Mandibles – insect jaws – offers imagination and warmth. The two lazy friends Manu and Jean-Gab want to get some money together and what better way than to train a giant fly to help them? With a silliness that makes Dumb and Dumber seem intellectual, this is easily the film festival’s loopiest film.
