Rama, a young writer and academic, leaves Paris to attend the trial of Laurence Coly, who is accused of murdering her 15-month-old daughter. Rama is writing a modern dramatization of the Medea myth and the case of Laurence Coly has therefore caught her interest. But as Rama begins to see more and more similarities between herself and the accused young woman Laurence in both background and talent, she begins to question her own life and her own abilities.

This is documentary filmmaker Alice Diop’s feature film debut, written together with Marie NDaye, the author behind the novel Three Strong Women. The film explores themes such as motherhood, racism and family relationships and was praised by critics at its Venice premiere where it won both the Silver Lion and The Lion of the Future for best debut.
