Marlene Dietrich is at her wicked best as Shanghai Lily, a courtesan with a scandalous reputation. During a three-day train journey through war-torn China, a diverse group of passengers is taken hostage by a rebel army, led by Henry Chang (played by Warner Oland).

“Shanghai Express” (1932), directed by Josef von Sternberg, won an Oscar for Best Cinematography and was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.

The screening is part of an afternoon dedicated to Warner Oland at the Västerbotten Museum.

Join us for an entire afternoon celebrating Warner Oland. Kim Khavar Fahlstedt (pictured) has authored a comprehensive biography on Oland, telling a story of dreams, identity, and escape. Fahlstedt will discuss the book and Oland’s life alongside Per Perstrand.
