Four girls from different historical periods spend their youth on the same farm in northeastern Germany — a four-sided homestead with a cobblestone courtyard, surrounded by meadows and a river. The stories of Alma, Erika, Angelika, and Lenka are subtly intertwined and span a century: from the time just before World War I, through the end of World War II, across the 1980s, and into the early 2000s.
The farm is seductively beautiful, yet something about the place seems to poison every new generation that grows up there. Tragedies are inherited; the walls and the faded photographs of the past carry memories and messages through time and space.
One can only bow to Mascha Schilinski’s second feature film, which earlier this year was awarded the Prix du Jury in Cannes. An exceptionally bold historical drama, made complete by Anna von Hausswolff’s haunting music as its soundtrack.
