In the eastern parts of Europe, in the Donbas in Ukraine, an often forgotten war continues. Director Loup Bureau spent three months following Ukrainian soldiers in battle against separatist supporters from Russia. We get to follow them into the trenches, that are reminiscent of famous counterparts from the First World War. It is an intimate and touching depiction of the soldiers’ humanity where the boundary between leisure and work is constantly disintegrating. The film is visually strong and striking, about a war that Europe mostly ignores.
