What would Umeå Film Festival be without Sing Along? During ten festivals, we have seen and sung along to some of the world’s most popular musical films. Friday, November 29, we proudly invite you to Cabaret. Is there a more epic musical to sing along to?
Cabaret was showered with Oscars when it came out in 1972. It combines fast pace, skillful acting and superb music and dance numbers with an ominous undertone that gives you a lot to think about. With a political undertone and subtle depiction of the rise of Nazism, the film is a must-see for all film lovers. A drama musical that takes us to Berlin during a time of unrest and change, where love and bitterness mix with the evil of Nazi Germany. The action takes place in Berlin in the 1930s, where the vivacious American singer Sally Bowles performs at the Kit Kat Klub. In the midst of decadence and debauched nightlife, the Nazi party grows stronger.
The film, based on the novel Farewell to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood, skillfully balances between cheerful cabaret depiction and the seriousness of the rise of Nazism. We are treated to unforgettable songs while director Bob Fosse makes the musical genre feel down to earth and realistic. Liza Minelli excels in the lead role as Sally Bowles and Joel Gray is unforgettable in his role as the conference manager. Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome, to a wonderful film and song experience!
The evening begins with a joint vocal warm-up where the joy of singing and relaxation are the focus.
