A film program about the forest – the queer forest. Whether there are trees there or not, as on Iceland, queers have always related to the forest as a place for secret meetings, a haven for erotic fantasies, feelings of freedom and a place to seek comfort from. Just like natural candies, the films are neither particularly natural nor healthy.
In this film program we meet seven stories where nature and the forest are highly present in different ways. Curated by Anna Linder in close collaboration with Kolbrún Inga Söring on behalf of the Umeå European Film Festival 2024. The selection has been made in view of the ongoing exhibition Eight Degrees – contemporary art about the forest, which is running until January 21, 2025 at Bildmuseet in Umeå.

sometimes passes through Västerbotten, much like the films we present in this section. The prize, a scholarship of 10,000 SEK, is awarded to an international documentary film that highlights a current and important topic. Each year, we focus on new themes that reflect the world around us.
For 2024, we have chosen to highlight three powerful films centered around the lives of children in times of change. One of these three films will receive the scholarship, as decided by an external jury. The winner, which will be announced during the Sunday screening, will be determined Friday evening after the award ceremony at Kajscenen.
With Rödspoven, we aim to honor documentary film as an art form while also shedding light on the pressing social issues we face in our time.
