In collaboration with Tromsø International Film Festival, Norrlandsoperan, Arctic Pulse – Arctic Music Circles, Interreg Aurora and Umeå Theatre Association, Umeå Film Festival invites you to a unique silent film concert featuring Med ackja och ren i Inka Läntas vinterland / Gierrisij ja hiergij Lenta Iŋŋgá dálvveednamin. The film will be accompanied by live music performed by Hildá Länsman, Svante Henryson, Tuomas Norvio, and Lávre Johan Eira.
The film is a hybrid between documentary and staged fiction, created in 1926 by Erik Bergström. It follows Inka Länta and her family in their everyday life and during the Jokkmokk Winter Market. It portrays Sámi life in northern Sweden during the 1920s and includes scenes from the nomadic school. The film can be interpreted both as a curious depiction and as part of a colonial gaze on Sápmi – a time when Sámi people faced oppression in Sweden, Finland, and Norway.
Four Sámi musicians from the Barents Region have been invited to create new music for the film using their voices and instruments. Thanks to a digital restoration in 2021, which revived the film’s original colors, it is once again available for screening – almost 100 years after its premiere.
