Sometimes there’s a feeling that certain individuals deserve a little extra attention. This time, we felt that way about Kai Gullmar. Below are three program events dedicated to Sweden’s first prominent female schlager composer – as well as a celebrated performer and actress.
15:00–16:00, Salong Tystnad
Author Talk with Ingela Hofsten (in Swedish)
Journalist and author Ingela Hofsten, who wrote the book Swing it, Kai!, will talk about Kai Gullmar – not only Sweden’s first prominent female schlager composer, but also a singer and film actress. She was a pioneer in her boldness, in her way of dressing provocatively for her time, and in living relatively openly in same-sex relationships. Ingela Hofsten shares stories about her and the era she lived in, accompanied by images and samples from her song catalogue.
16:30–18:00, Vävenscenen
Film Screening: Med dej i mina armar (in swedish)
A Swedish screwball-style comedy about a playboy-like director who gets hit in the head with a golf ball and suffers from amnesia – leading to a series of comic mishaps, and of course, true love! The film stars Karin Ekelund and Edvin Adolphson, one of the big on-screen couples of the 1940s. Directed by feature film debutant Hasse Ekman, who would go on to become one of Swedish entertainment’s most prolific multitalents. The title song, written by Kai Gullmar and significant to the plot, appears in several versions and became a hit.
18:00–21:00, Kajen
En liten melodi… Kai
Drawing from Kai Gullmar’s extensive discography, artists Amanda Fritzén and Clara Gustavsson present swooning melodies and sing-along favourites from the golden era of film, revue theatre, and the gramophone. Stop by, soak in the atmosphere of a bygone era, and enjoy the evening with both new and old friends.
Free tickets released Thursday, November 13
This event is presented in collaboration with Kultur för seniorer and Umeå Teaterförening.
