Special screening of Ellos Eatnu during the Ubmejen Biejvieh

In collaboration with Amnesty Umeå, Såhkie and Folkets Bio Umeå, we are presenting a special screening during Ubmejen Biejvieh (Sami Week) of Ellos Eatnu – Let the River Flow. The screening will open with a joik performed by Lena Maria Nilsson, and after the film Amnesty will offer some snacks to the screening. The film will be played with english subtitles.

The film follows newly graduated teacher Ester, who moves back home to Alta after being offered a temporary position at a local school. To be accepted by her new colleagues, she hides her Sámi background. However, she is soon inspired by her cousin Mihkkal and gradually finds the courage to embrace her identity. Through Mihkkal, Ester becomes involved in the ongoing protests against the construction of the Alta dam. The Norwegian government has decided to develop the river without taking the Sámi people into account, even though their community risks being submerged if the dam is built. Based on true events, the film portrays Ester’s existential journey and political awakening, telling a story that is just as urgent today as it was in 1978.
