Become a volunteer during Umeå Film Festival 2026!

Every year at the end of November and beginning of December, we screen films from morning until evening at Kulturhuset Väven during Umeå Film Festival.

Our volunteers are an essential part of making the festival run smoothly. There are many different ways to get involved as a volunteer. We have listed some of the positions below, where you can also find the application form. If you sign up as a volunteer during UEFF 2026 you are expected to take a minimum of 2 shifts. Each shift is around 4-5 hours and includes a food break. You also get a shirt to wear during the week and you can of course use your volunteer-badge to enter all screenings and events.

Please note that if you apply during June and July, you will receive a response in August.

Volunteer Coordinators
In 2026, we will have two Volunteer Coordinators working together throughout the festival period. They will participate at information meetings, respond to emails or forward them to the appropriate people, coordinate the volunteer kick-off event and closing party, and purchase refreshments within the allocated budget. This is a volunteer position with a small compensation.

Venue Supervisor
Venue Supervisors take on an overall leadership role during their shifts and are responsible for coordinating the volunteers within their assigned work area. They organize tasks such as assigning entrance duties and ticket booth positions, ensure that all volunteers receive approximately 30–40 minutes of break time during their shift, and provide support when needed. If someone on the team gets sick, they are responsible for arranging a replacement volunteer. Venue Supervisors are expected to have a good understanding of our ticketing system. Additional training for this role will be provided before the festival. This is a volunteer position with a small compensation.

School Screening Volunteer
During the festival, we provide screenings for schools. School Screening Volunteers are present during these screenings to welcome school groups as they arrive, check attendance lists, and help guide students to their seats. The role also involves organizing coat racks for students and, for some screenings, introducing the film before it begins. This is a great role for those who want to volunteer earlier in the day, since school screenings happen mostly in the morning and early afternoon.

Ticket Booth Volunteer
As a Ticket Booth Volunteer, you will sell tickets and concession items to festival visitors. You are expected to learn how to use the ticketing system and understand the different ticket categories. You will also help maintain a clean and welcoming atmosphere in the foyer and the event space Mingla when needed.

Cinema Host
As an Cinema Host, you are responsible for checking tickets and admitting audiences to the screening rooms. Between screenings you will clean the screening room and ensure that the foyer remains tidy and welcoming. For some screenings, Cinema Hosts may stay in the auditorium to watch the film and make sure everything runs smoothly, but not for all screenings. We have made changes to our volunteer structure for 2026; this role was previously called Screening Volunteer. It is now called Cinema Host, and the responsibilities have been adjusted accordingly. Cinema hosts are also expected to assist with cleaning Matverkstan and other festival areas during their shifts throughout the week.

Accreditation Volunteer
Accreditation Volunteers distribute passes and badges to filmmakers and other guests who are attending the festival as industry professionals. They also hand out volunteer passes and ensure that all volunteers have received their badges. In addition, Accreditation Volunteers keep track of volunteer T-shirts and work clothing and may assist with practical tasks such as booking taxis for guests or handling similar requests when needed.

Photographer
Festival Photographers provide photographs from events, discussions, and screenings to our communications team. This role is more independent and flexible than most other volunteer positions. Photographers move between different venues as needed and are given time to edit and deliver their material.

Food Team
The Food Team is a new addition for this year. The team members meet in Matverkstan each morning to prepare meals for everyone working during the day. You will work primarily in the mornings, and then have the rest of the day off to watch films and take part in festival events and activities.
