Silent Film Concert: Norrtullsligan

Accompanied by Edward von Past’s piano, we present the film adaptation of Elin Wägner’s 1908 novel Norrtullsligan. Four young female office workers share an apartment in Stockholm, trying to make ends meet in a world where wages are low, men are intrusive and marriage still seems like the safest way out.

In their shared home, a spirit stove sits on the rug, sausages are stashed in desk drawers, and strategies are devised to ward off unwanted male attention. One solution is to seal the keyhole with nail polish so they can move freely around the apartment in their underwear. But behind the humour lies a sharp portrayal of women’s working conditions and the solidarity that grows between them.

When the film premiered in 1923, questions of labour, independence, love and women’s civil rights were very much at the forefront. The leading roles are played by Tora Teje, Inga Tidblad, Renée Björling and Linnea Hillberg.

The film will be introduced by Clara Gustavsson.

Approximate running time: 1 hour 16 minutes.
