//3…2…1… Launch …your short sci-fi film in our galaxy! We are looking for short films within the genre of sci-fi to screen at our festival in a special segment. The film does not need to be newly produced – but needs to be available for digital screening and revolve around the outer space. Films produced within the nearest galaxy are eligible to apply to the section.
Submit your film to our section Northern Perspectives! In this section, both documentary and fiction films are shown – both short and feature-length. Northern Perspectives is one of our most popular sections at the film festival. In 2024, we had over 800 visitors to the films and film blocks presented in the film section.
The films in this section must have a connection to the northern circumpolar region – either through their content or because one of the filmmakers has a strong link to the north. Since 2023, we have also opened up the section to include films from other parts of the world, such as Greenland, Iceland, Canada, and Finland. Films produced in Sweden and submitted to the festival also have a chance to be nominated for our film award Storspoven (read more about past winners here).
All films submitted to the festival are reviewed by a reference group consisting of 4–5 people from various cultural fields, along with staff from the film festival. The reference group watches all submitted entries.
Submissions are open until Sunday, August 31, 2025. Entries received after the deadline will not be considered. Photo from the screening of The Raid 2024, courtesy of Film i Västerbotten.
Feature film and documentary
If you would like to submit your feature film or documentary to this year’s edition of Umeå Film Festival, please fill out the form below. Every year, we showcase around 40 feature films in our sections Panorama, Gala, and Documentary. Responses to submissions will be provided at the end of September.
