Josh O’Connor plays James Balline Mooney, a married father of young children and a somewhat unsuccessful artist. In the basement, he hatches plans to rob the local art museum with a few friends, while his wife Terri (Alana Haim) has no idea what is going on. Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy, Meek’s Cutoff, First Cow) returns with her signature long takes and character-driven storytelling. In Mastermind, we are transported back to the 1970s—a period recreated with impressive simplicity and precision. The result is a clever and entertaining American indie film about a heist that goes slightly awry.
