Umeå European Film Festival’s different sections and programs

Umeå European Film Festival is constantly working to offer a broad program with several exciting sections. On this page you can read about what the different sections contain and what other program items we offer – to make it easier to plan your festival visit. Are you looking for a movie that you saw during the 2021 festival and do not remember the title of? Check out Movies from 2021 here.

Events

UEFF has a rich tradition of offering a range of events during the festival week. Sing along, Dinner and a Movie, Filmquiz and live music. A way to spend time with loved ones simply.

Gala

Our gala section features unique previews of long-awaited cinema premieres. Gala is often associated with a red carpet, bubble and mingling. You will certainly get this atmosphere during the opening night – which always takes place on the first day of the film festival.

Panorama

In the panorama section, we collect a selection of favorites from other film festivals around Europe. It can be anything from exciting debutants to established directors. A section that can surprise in many different ways.

Perspective from the north

This is the section where Umeå European Film Festival presents films and filmmakers with roots in the north. We are very happy to show all these fantastic productions and we see it as an important element in how we can be involved and broaden and change the image of what northern Sweden is and can be. Every year we have an open registration where the filmmakers can register their films. A program group selects which films are then included in the festival’s program and some of the films are then competed for the film prize Storspoven for NOK 25,000. But in addition to short films, feature films and documentaries, this section also includes Work in progress, where unfinished film projects meet an audience at an early stage, a fantastic way to hear filmmakers talk about their ongoing projects with a conversation leader.

Documentary

Invaluable time documents from near and far are displayed in our documentary section. Meet contemporary and highly interesting documentaries that you would not otherwise see. A section that since 2021 has been broadened and expanded with the prize Rödspoven . A prize of SEK 10,000 given to a documentary that raises an important contemporary issue. Every year the theme is different. In 2021, films with the theme Climate / Nature were shown. What the theme will be in 2022 remains to be seen.

Special screenings

This section contains a varied selection of films that long to be shown on the big screen. It can be forgotten film historical gems, horrible horror films or new visionary cross-genre works. The section often includes visiting filmmakers with post-screening conversations.

Skolbio

For many years, the film festival has shown Skolbio daytime for young pupils and students. There are many ways to use school cinema as an educational tool in the classroom, not least a visit to the film festival is a cultural experience in itself.

Industry Day

Every year, Film i Västerbotten together with Umeå arranges the European Film Festival Industry Day. It is aimed at those who work with film, study film or are interested in filmmaking. Here you can take part in conversations and lectures about film. So take the chance to meet old and new friends and listen to our eminent guests.

Outdoor Cinema

During the late summer, we show films in one of Umeå’s beautiful parks with free admission. Bring a nice picnic and come!
