Cinema in the park
For the eleventh year in a row, Umeå Filmfestival invites you to the annual outdoor cinema event. The screening starts at 9:00 PM, the 23rd of August, in Döbeln’s Park. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on, as well as warm clothing. The store Frukthörnan ensures that there will be snacks for sale on-site, and of course you can also bring your own snacks.
The films that will be screened are Fallen Leaves by Aki Kaurusmäki and the short film Unborn Biro by Inga Elin Marakatt. Unborn Biro was 2023 winner of the Storspoven award, given by Umeå Filmfestival.

A pregnant widow is in desperate need of help to survive and provide food for her daughter. Lacking support from society, she decides to steal silver. However, the silver is cursed, leading to consequences for everyone, including the unborn child.
Elin Marakatt, born and raised in a Sámi reindeer-herding family in Sweden, is a writer, journalist, and reindeer herder. She holds a bachelor’s degree in cultural analysis from Umeå University and has studied film at the Sámi University. “Unborn Biru” marks her debut as a director and screenwriter.
Fallen Leaves

“Fallen Leaves” won the jury prize at Cannes 2023 and has been praised as a warm blanket in a cold world. The film tells the story of two lonely strangers who meet in the night in their pursuit of life’s first, greatest, and only love. Despite their hopes and dreams, they face many obstacles. Everyday trivial problems are amplified by deeper challenges such as alcoholism, lost phone numbers, and not even knowing each other’s names.
The film will be screened in Finnish with Swedish subtitles.

Filmmakers can submit their films until August 28th for a chance to receive the award during the Umeå European Film Festival 2024, which takes place from November 26th to December 1st. //
