About the film: In the documentary film Soviet Barbara, the Story of Ragnar Kjartansson in Moscow, we follow the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson during the construction of a project at a newly opened art museum in Moscow. The art project aims to re-create 100 episodes of the TV soap opera Santa Barbara in Russian together with a film crew. The original Tv series reached incredible viewing figures in the post-Soviet period. The idea is for him to produce one episode a day at the lavish new museum owned by one of Russia’s richest oligarchs. But when Russia attacks Ukraine, Kjartansson finds himself in a moral dilemma. Soviet Barbara is an immersive documentary film that portrays the complications that can arise when launching an exhibition – in the midst of turbulent geopolitical times.
