After 16 years in exile, Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) returns to post-war Germany with his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller). The year is 1949, and the Cold War is underway. In a black Buick, they travel through a divided country left in ruins by the Second World War, from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar.
Paweł Pawlikowski, director of Ida (2013) and Cold War (2018), returns with a new historical drama in his signature black-and-white style. Fatherland is an 82-minute road movie in which every frame seems to contain an entire world.
